Job Description:
The Somali Museum seeks enthusiastic individuals to organize and deliver cultural programs at the Museum and within the broader community, including schools, nonprofits, neighborhood organizations, and other community spaces. Ideal candidates will be confident in their ability to manage and build strong relationships with community partners and demonstrate professional and organizational skills. The Program Coordinator will organize and lead programs in collaboration with these partners.
About the Somali Museum:
The Somali Museum is one of the few museums in the world dedicated to preserving and promoting Somali culture and art. As the hub of Somali creativity in North America, the museum showcases a unique collection of traditional and contemporary Somali art and artifacts. It also serves as a vital resource for Somali artists in the diaspora. Located in Minnesota, the Somali Museum is a unique institution that uses Somali art to foster community connections. One of its key roles is bridging the gap between Somali-American youth and older generations, fostering understanding and appreciation of Somali culture among all generations, and introducing Somali culture to non-Somalis for the first time.
Key Responsibilities:
Organize, schedule, and manage programs in collaboration with community partners.
Oversee and coordinate the daily calendar with other program staff.
Coordinate and monitor the activities of the program, ensuring effective implementation.
Set priorities and manage the overall direction of the programs.
Regularly update the calendar with necessary events and program activities.
Network and build relationships with potential community partners.
Prepare or assist in preparing grant requests and securing funding from external sponsors.
Provide detailed reports to the Operations Director for submission to funders.
Requirements:
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently while maintaining a team focus.
Strong timeliness, accountability, and attention to detail.
Commitment to producing high-quality work.
Leadership experience and a strong presence in instructional or group settings.
Ability to relate to and work effectively with diverse populations in various environments.
Technical proficiency with computers and databases.
Comfortable using Google Drive and willing to learn new software.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with Somali culture.
Fluency in Somali.
Previous experience working in a museum setting.
Hours: Full-time
Salary: $40,000 annually
